2019 in Serverless

JANUARY

• API Gateway announced a 99.95% SLA.
• Go became a supported language on Google Cloud Functions.
• Braintree, a PayPal-owned payments processor, unveiled the first version of its own serverless platform for working with transactions.

FEBRUARY

• Amazon released tools to build and test AWS Step Functions workflows locally.
• A collection of academics released a 10 year update to an important cloud computing paper, this time focusing on the past, present, and future of serverless [PDF]. Still a must read paper if you're looking for some reading over the holidays (it's short!)
• Cloudflare announced workers.dev though the product offering has changed a bit since then.
• Azure Functions gained first class Java support. Enhanced Java support on serverless platforms became a bit of a theme this year.

MARCH

• We learnt five things about Azure Functions [video]
• A prominent British charity shared the fascinating story of their migration to serverless. A genuinely interesting case study of sorts.

APRIL

• Azure Functions unveiled a premium plan complete with pre-warmed instances (which could use up to 14GB of RAM).
• Google unveiled Cloud Run, a compute platform for running HTTP-driven containers in a serverless fashion.
• AWS introduced S3 Batch Operations for a large scale way to run Lambda functions over entire buckets of objects more efficiently.

MAY

• AWS explained how the Lambda execution environment would be changing before the end of the year, including adding support for Node 10.
• Cloudflare added a key value store to their Workers platform.
• Amazon Aurora Serverless, AWS's serverlessly-billed database service, added a new Data API, essentially providing database services over HTTPS instead of the traditional way.

JUNE

• Jeremy Daly launched the Serverless Chats podcast which continues to put out great episodes frequently.

JULY

• Amazon introduced EventBridge, a serverless event bus for disparate applications to talk to each other.
• Amazon also released a toolkit for building and debugging Lambda functions in VS Code.
• PHP went serverless with Laravel's Vapor platform.

AUGUST

• Serverless Inc. released Serverless Components.
• Alex Ellis, the creator of OpenFaaS, took a look at the future of serverless [video].
• We began to see the idea of WebAssembly being used on serverless platforms being discussed more as the year went on, including in this tutorial.
• Azure Functions unveiled Python support.

SEPTEMBER

• Nathan Malishev ran a AWS Lambda cold start comparison (back in the good old days before 'provisioned concurrency'). It was our most popular link of the year.
• AWS Lambda finally got access to better networking when within a VPC.

OCTOBER

• The creator of the relatively young faastRuby Ruby-based serverless platform was hired by Shopify and the platform was shut down.
• Cloud-based business app provider Zoho announced they were getting their own serverless platform too.

NOVEMBER

• New Relic acquired IOpipe.
• Initially unveiled in April, Azure Functions' premium plan became generally available.
• Google Cloud Run also went GA.
• AWS Lambda turned five years old.
• AWS Lambda began to support FIFO SQS queues as a source.

DECEMBER

• AWS Lambda finally provided a way to get rid of 'cold starts' (for a fee).
• Atlassian announed their own serverless cloud development platform, built on top of AWS Lambda.
• AWS Fargate, Amazon's 'run containers in a serverless fashion' service, added a Spot service for doing all of that more cheaply on unused capacity.
