AWS Summit: All the key announcements
From the April 4th 2018 San Francisco event
Amazon hold a number of AWS Summit events throughout the year at various global locations. They’re designed to bring together those interested in cloud computing to both collaborate and learn more about Amazon Web Services.
The most recent event was at San Francisco’s Moscone Center — here’s a quick rundown of all the major announcements:
🤐 Amazon introduce secrets management service
AWS Secrets Manager is a new service with pay-as-you-go pricing to help protect access to your apps and services. It’s available in a range of regions right now.
📈 Amazon Aurora is the fastest growing AWS service in history
Aurora is Amazon’s own keenly priced hosted relational database service, based on MySQL. Now tens of thousands of folks are using it for their relational databases.
🛢 S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access is a new S3 storage class
This is a new storage option designed for those who want a lower-cost option for infrequently accessed data, (and don’t require the multiple Availability Zone data resilience model of the standard S3 classes).
🌏 AWS Config now includes multi-account/region data aggregation
Config is a service that lets AWS users assess, audit, and evaluate the configurations of AWS resources. These new features make it easier to gather information from various regions and accounts (although it’s only available to nine regions right now).
👍 SAM goes Open-Source
The AWS Serverless Application Model (SAM) implementation is now available under the popular Apache 2.0 license, meaning you can now contribute, fork and propose changes to it.
“AWS SAM extends AWS CloudFormation to provide a simplified way of defining the resources needed by your serverless application”.
💬 Amazon Translate is open to all
Translate was introduced at re:Invent last year — now the language translation service is generally available and open to all. It offers fast and competent translations between English and six languages: Spanish, Chinese, French, German, Arabic, and Portuguese. More languages are to be added in the coming months, including Japanese, Russian and others.
📝 Transcribe is also now available to all
This automatic speech recognition service converts speech to text and is said to be highly accurate, can detect different speakers and can be fed additional custom vocabulary to improve its worth. Like Amazon Translate, it’s availability has just opened up.
🖥 Machine learning on the up
Amazon were keen to share that SageMaker, their fully-managed machine learning platform, is proving popular with developers and scientists from across the industry.
New features have also been added to SageMaker, including support for TensorFlow version 1.6 and Apache MXNet 1.1.
📋 A new private Certificate Authority service
This is a new managed private CA service that helps you “easily and securely manage the lifecycle of your private certificates”. ACM Private CA is now available in several global regions.
🔥 An AWS Firewall Manager
This new security tool lets users centrally configure and manage AWS WAF rules across accounts and apps. A few different pricing models on this depending on your usage.
“a single service to create firewall protection policies and enforce them consistently across your Application Load Balancer and Amazon CloudFront infrastructure”
📌 S3 Select is now generally available
Here’s a new Amazon S3 capability designed to “pull out only the data you need from an object”, this can improve the performance and reduce the cost of applications that need to access data in S3.
