OpenShift 4.13: Create serverless functions and more

Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4.13 brings key features and enhancements to the developer experience in the Red Hat OpenShift console. Here’s a quick overview of the 4.13 features and improvements based on customer requests:

  • Easily identify which pods are receiving traffic.
  • Create serverless functions from the Developer perspective when using Red Hat OpenShift Serverless.
  • Import from Git flow now supports pipeline-as-code.
  • Improved user experience around Helm charts:
    • The creation and deletion process is now performed asynchronously, so you don’t have to wait for those actions to complete before performing your next task in the console.
    • The Helm Release list now includes a Status column.
    • New terminology: users now Create and Delete Helm Releases.  
  • Navigation improvements to the Pipeline overall experience when using Red Hat OpenShift Pipelines.
  • Customize the timeout period and/or provide a custom image for your own web terminal instance.
  • Administrators can now set default resources to be pre-pinned in the Developer Perspective navigation for all users.

Let’s drill into a few of these.

Easily identify which pods are receiving traffic

Developers and admins alike are now easily able to view whether or not a pod is receiving traffic. In the Topology view, the Resources tab of the side panel displays an icon indicating whether the associated pods are receiving traffic (Figure 1).

In the Pods list view in the Workloads section of the Administrator Perspective, you can manage the default columns of their pods list, and display the Receiving traffic column for easy access to the information (Figure 2).

Create serverless functions

As of OpenShift 4.13, you can now create serverless functions by using the Create Serverless function or Import from Git flows from the Add page (Figure 3).

Console customization by the admin

We have enhanced the form-based experience to customize areas of the OpenShift console from Cluster Settings. Cluster administrators can now define the pre-pinned resources on the Developer Perspective navigation for all users, as shown in  Figure 4.
